What About Him?

”What about him, Lord?” was the question Peter asked Jesus after Jesus revealed to him how Peter was going to live out the rest of his life - preaching the Good News but being led to places he himself does not want to go with arms outstretched (Peter died a martyr’s death).  Peter’s question was in regards to John.  What do you think Jesus’ answer was?  He said “What concern is it of yours? You follow me.”

Basically, “Peter we are not talking about John, we are talking about you!  Stay focused and mind your own business!”  In other words Jesus was saying to Peter to focus on what he’s being asked to do and really to focus on the life with which God has gifted to him.  Each person has a unique calling in life, a unique way of communicating and transmitting the message of God’s love and mercy, and we just need to focus on that and do that well and all other things God will take care of.  There are things that we just cannot worry about because we have no control over them.  So instead of getting worked up and anxious about what we cannot control, we ought to put all of our energy in what we can control - our own actions, behaviors, attitudes, choice of words, reactions, etc.  Because once we realize we ought to do what we are called to do well, then can we truly live in freedom, and in that freedom we will be able to love with the greatest kind of love - to love authentically, truly, and unreservedly, the love with which God loves us.  That is what it means to follow Jesus.

God has a special plan for each one of us.  Each one of us has  a unique calling.  If we focus on another person’s unique plan, we will miss out on all of the wonderful things God wishes to give to us.  So let us not question “What about him?” and ask ourselves “What about me?  What am I called to do?”

Jesus, you told Peter to not worry about John but to worry about himself and told Him to follow you. Teach me to ask the Father what it is that I ought to do, and to ask Him to grant unto me the graces to do that well so that I may follow you, a path that will only lead me to true freedom, a freedom that loves unreservedly.
